What Are Timezones?
Timezones are regions of the Earth that have the same standard time. They were created to account for the rotation of the Earth and the need for synchronized timekeeping across different regions. Before timezones, local mean time was used, meaning that every city or region had its own time based on the position of the sun.
The Formation of Timezones
The concept of timezones was introduced in the late 19th century by Sir Sandford Fleming, a Canadian engineer. Before that, each city kept its own time, which created confusion and complications, especially with the advent of rail travel and telegraph communication.
Timezones were first implemented in 1884 at the International Meridian Conference, where the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) was established in Greenwich, England. The world was then divided into 24 timezones, each one hour apart from its neighboring zone, with each timezone representing one hour of the Earth's 24-hour day.
The system was based on the Earth's rotation: one complete rotation equals 24 hours, and as the Earth rotates, different parts of the world experience daylight and nighttime at different times. By dividing the world into 24 equal timezones, the new system allowed for coordinated timekeeping across the globe.
Timezones continue to evolve today, with variations for daylight saving time and local adjustments, but the basic principle remains the same—helping people across the world synchronize their activities in a more efficient way.
