Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday in Ukraine, known as *Velykden* (Great Day), is one of the most significant and cherished religious holidays in the country. Celebrated by the majority of Ukrainian Orthodox and Greek Catholic Christians, it marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is a time of deep spiritual reflection, family gatherings, and vibrant traditions. The date of Easter in Ukraine often differs from Western Easter due to the use of the Julian calendar by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Preparations begin weeks in advance with *Great Lent*, a period of fasting and prayer. The week leading up to Easter, known as *Holy Week*, is filled with special church services and rituals. On Easter Sunday, Ukrainians attend a midnight or early morning Resurrection Service, where the priest proclaims, *"Christ is Risen!"* and the congregation responds, *"Indeed, He is Risen!"* This is followed by the blessing of *pysanky* (intricately decorated Easter eggs) and *paska* (a special Easter bread), which are central to the celebration. Families then gather for a festive meal, breaking their fast with these blessed foods, along with other traditional dishes like *kovbasa* (sausage) and *holubtsi* (cabbage rolls). Easter in Ukraine is also a time for community and cultural expression, with folk songs, dances, and games adding to the joyous atmosphere. The holiday symbolizes renewal, hope, and the triumph of life over death, deeply rooted in both religious faith and Ukrainian heritage.
