Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve, known as *Štedrý deň* in Slovakia, is one of the most cherished and magical holidays of the year. Celebrated on December 24th, it is a time for family gatherings, traditions, and festive preparations. The day is filled with anticipation and excitement as Slovaks prepare for the arrival of *Ježiško* (Baby Jesus), who brings gifts to children. The day begins with last-minute preparations, including decorating the Christmas tree, which is often kept hidden until the evening as a surprise for children. Homes are adorned with lights, ornaments, and nativity scenes, creating a warm and festive atmosphere. A key tradition is the Christmas dinner, which is typically meatless and includes dishes like *kapustnica* (sauerkraut soup), *oškvarkové pagáče* (lard pastries), and *vianočný šalát* (potato salad). The meal often concludes with *oplátky* (Christmas wafers) spread with honey, symbolizing unity and love. Before dinner, families gather around the tree to exchange gifts, sing carols, and share stories. Many Slovaks attend midnight Mass, known as *Polnočná omša*, to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Christmas Eve is a time of reflection, gratitude, and togetherness, embodying the spirit of peace and joy that defines the holiday season in Slovakia.
