Candlemas

Candlemas, celebrated on February 2nd, is a traditional Christian holiday observed in Liechtenstein, as well as in many other countries. Known as *Mariä Lichtmess* in German, it commemorates the presentation of Jesus at the Temple and the purification of the Virgin Mary, 40 days after the birth of Jesus, as described in the Bible. In Liechtenstein, Candlemas holds both religious and cultural significance. It marks the end of the Christmas season, and many people attend church services where candles are blessed, symbolizing Jesus as the "light of the world." These blessed candles are often used throughout the year for special occasions or during times of prayer. Traditionally, Candlemas also served as an important date in the agricultural calendar, signaling the midpoint of winter and the gradual return of longer days. In rural areas, it was a time to prepare for the upcoming spring planting season. While modern life has diminished some of these agricultural traditions, Candlemas remains a meaningful day for reflection and celebration in Liechtenstein, blending faith, history, and the anticipation of brighter days ahead.
