Midsummer Day

Midsummer Day, known as **Jāņi** in Latvia, is one of the most cherished and widely celebrated holidays in the country. It takes place on **June 23-24**, coinciding with the summer solstice, the longest day and shortest night of the year. Rooted in ancient pagan traditions, Jāņi is a celebration of nature, fertility, and the power of the sun. During Jāņi, Latvians gather in the countryside or by the sea to honor the natural world. Key traditions include wearing **wreaths made of oak leaves (for men) and flowers (for women)**, lighting **bonfires** to symbolize the sun's energy, and singing traditional folk songs called **Līgo songs**. The holiday is also associated with **herbal magic**, as people collect wildflowers and herbs believed to have protective and healing properties. Feasting is a central part of the celebration, with special foods like **cheese with caraway seeds (Jāņu siers)** and **beer** being staples. The night is spent outdoors, often staying awake until sunrise to welcome the new day.
