About Epiphany holiday in Italy

**Epiphany in Italy** Epiphany, known as *La Befana* in Italy, is celebrated on January 6th and marks the end of the Christmas season. This holiday commemorates the visit of the Three Wise Men to the baby Jesus, but in Italian tradition, it is also associated with the folklore figure of La Befana, a kind old witch who delivers gifts to children. According to legend, La Befana was invited by the Wise Men to join them in their journey to visit the newborn Jesus. She declined but later regretted her decision and set out to find the child, carrying gifts. Unable to locate him, she continues to fly on her broomstick each year, leaving sweets and small presents for well-behaved children and coal (or dark candy) for those who misbehave. On Epiphany Eve (January 5th), children hang stockings or leave out shoes for La Befana to fill. The holiday is celebrated with festive markets, parades, and traditional foods like *panettone* or *befanini* cookies. In some regions, such as Rome, Piazza Navona hosts a lively fair with toys, sweets, and decorations. Epiphany is a cherished holiday in Italy, blending religious significance with folklore and family traditions, making it a magical conclusion to the Christmas season.
