Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday, known as *Jueves Santo* in Guatemala, is a significant religious observance during Holy Week (*Semana Santa*). It commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples and the institution of the Eucharist. In Guatemala, this day is marked by solemn religious processions, elaborate street carpets (*alfombras*), and church services. The processions, often organized by local brotherhoods (*cofradías*), feature large floats (*andas*) carrying statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, which are paraded through the streets. The *alfombras*, made from colored sawdust, flowers, and other natural materials, are intricately designed and laid out along procession routes, symbolizing devotion and artistry. Guatemalans also participate in the tradition of visiting seven churches (*visita de las siete iglesias*) on Maundy Thursday, reflecting on the Stations of the Cross and Jesus' journey to his crucifixion.
