Cyprus National Day

Cyprus National Day, celebrated on April 1st, commemorates the start of the Cypriot struggle for independence against British colonial rule in 1955. This day marks the beginning of the EOKA (National Organization of Cypriot Fighters) movement, which sought to end British control and achieve *enosis* (union) with Greece. Although Cyprus eventually gained independence in 1960 without union, the day remains a symbol of national pride and resistance. Celebrations include parades, school events, and ceremonies honoring the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom. It is a public holiday, allowing Cypriots to reflect on their history and national identity.
