Orthodox Christmas Day

Orthodox Christmas Day in Belarus is celebrated on January 7th, following the Julian calendar used by the Eastern Orthodox Church. This religious holiday commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and is one of the most significant and cherished celebrations in the country. The day is marked by a blend of spiritual traditions, family gatherings, and festive customs. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, many Belarusians observe a 40-day fasting period, abstaining from meat, dairy, and other indulgences. On Christmas Eve, known as *Svyatki*, families gather for a special meal called *Kutia*, which typically includes a dish made from wheat, honey, poppy seeds, and nuts, symbolizing unity and prosperity. The meal often consists of 12 dishes, representing the 12 apostles. On Christmas Day, people attend church services, which are filled with hymns, prayers, and liturgies. Homes are often decorated with festive ornaments, and families exchange gifts. Traditional caroling, known as *Kolyadki*, is also a popular custom, with groups of singers visiting homes to spread joy and receive treats in return.
